(FTP)
is File Transfer Protocol. Ftp is one of my best ways
to find many mp3 Albums and songs. One thing to remember
about ftp, 90% of the ftp sites you will be downloading
from are located on someone personal home computer.
Which means that a site might not always be online.
If the person decides to shutdown his computer to go
to work then the IP address of this Site could change.
There are a lot of Ratio sites, they require you to
upload a file before downloading. Some ratio site's
are 1:1 and some are 1:4. Also there are many membership
sites, these sites have a text file that you can download
after connecting to the site that tells how to become
a member. There are private site's that someone has
setup for friends. And there are banner site's , these
sites require you to go to website's normally (Porno)
and click on banners starting from the ftp site owners
WebPages. They get paid for each click coming from their
website. And you have to search through these Sites
to find a User Name and Password, these are the worst
of the ftp site's, stay away from them if you can. And
last but not least there are free site's you don't find
many of these and when you do they are crowded and may
have a hard time connecting.
Ok
let's get started. First you need to download a few
programs. First go to Leapware.com
and download LeapFtp 2.x. After you've gotten that program
go to Mp3Fiend.com
page and Download Mp3fiend, or you can get both these
programs and many more from our Utiliies
section. Install both programs.
Ok
now that the programs are installed . I will cover finding
song with fiend. I don't use fiend to download files
just locate them for me. I started up Mp3 fiend and
Entered Prodigy in the search window. Below are some
returns I got from mp3 fiend, and how to decipher what
it found.

So
we decide we want to download this song . Lets take
apart the address so we can use it in LeapFtp or which
ever ftp program you my use. (ftp://)
just tells use that it is a ftp server (mp3:mp3)
the first mp3 is the user name you will use connecting
to the server and the second mp3 is the password you
will use. (@24.0.212.93)
is the IP address of the ftp server. Notice the IP address
of the Server above the one I selected to download from.
Look closely at it's IP address (@150.243.173.156:156)
See something different ? The :156
part. When you see that you will have to enter that
in as the Port #. Now your ready to try to connect to
the site. Pay close attention to the welcome message
when you connect to the site. Many times there will
be special instruction specific to the site.
You
can also use many diffrent programs or website searches
to locate ftp's. Lets look at how Oth.net does things
and how we can use their search. I did a search for
Scooter this time. This was first return from the search.

When
you put your pointer on the title as if to download
the file through Oth.net you will see the ftp site's
address at the bottom of your browser. So I would Use
5411k ftp://dutton.dynip.com as my ftp site location.
And our user and password would be anonymous. You can
also right-click on the song and select (copy shortcut)
from the menu in IE or (Save link as) if you are using
Netscape. The ftp address will be copied to clipboard,
which you can later paste in Leapftp.

There
are many ftp search engines on the Internet. You can
find some in our Mp3 Search
section. When using any of them you should follow the
principals you learned here on this page.
