The Music
Clip brings Sony's engineers into the world of portable
digital audio. From the aesthetics, it seems they did
an excellent job. The Music Clip maintains a compact yet
stylish and rugged look. The back-lit LCD seems to only
display track number and little other information. Thankfully,
Sony decided to include USB support for very fast transfer
rates. Finally, Sony also includes support for the proprietary
ATRAC3 digital audio format. The Music Clip can play back
OpenMG MP3 and OpenMG ATRAC3 files. But what is OpenMG?
According to Sony: "OpenMG is SDMI compliant application
software that enables the PC to securely store digital
music content downloaded from the Internet or recorded
from other sources on the hard drive. OpenMG Software
also allows the secure digital music content to be transferred
back and forth from the VAIO Music ClipT Personal Network
Player." Basically, you'll have to convert all of your
MP3s into these formats.

| The Sony
Music Clip looks really cool to begin with, but the hassle
of converting your old music into this format may make
it unworthwhile. You're also going to have to deal with
SDMI, but that may not be such a problem depending on
what kind of user you are. It does sport a nice back-lit
LCD, and even USB transfer rates. However, the 64 MB storage
cannot be expanded (although the built-in CODEC's can
be). At the MSRP of $299, it hovers between medium and
high cost for an MP3 player. Sony may be a consumer electronics
giant, but Music Clip is not a top contender. |
