Requirements
To play MP3 files, you'll need at least a 75-MHz Pentium
computer with 16MB of RAM (creating MP3 files requires
a Pentium/133 or better with 32MB of RAM), a 16-bit
sound card, a CD-ROM drive, and speakers or headphones.
You'll also need a lot of hard disk space to store MP3
files: At 3 to 5 megabytes per file, you can fill up
a hard disk very quickly.

History
It

PCs as powerful as the Pentium were a long, long way
to come. Having initially dissmissed the MP3 craze as
a cult phenomenon for computer "geeks" when it was released,
the music industry is now alarmed at the speed with
which digital downloading has spread.

growth of MP3 on the Internet has been phenomenal, recent
statistics has shown that "MP3" has surpassed "sex"
as the #1 search word on the Internet.
The popularity stems from the accessibility of the files
and the fact that they are downloadable for free. Also
because of its compressed format, people are able to
save hours of music on their hard disk or on a CD. So
why go to a record store if you can download all the
music you like for free in near CD quality sound?
